When Pioneers moved to the West

they decided to hold races and a parade to celebrate!

Happy Pioneer Day! My sisters spent the night at my house Thursday and Friday we got up at 5:30am to go volunteer for the Deseret News Marathon. (Ok, seriously, people! There's no need to drive to town the night before to park/sleepover making it difficult for the rest of us to find a place to park!) Anyway, so we brought garbage cans over and then wore plastic gloves to hand out bagels to the finishers of the 10k. I was surprised that with as many sweaty-newly-finished-running people as were hanging around Liberty Park it didn't smell anywhere near as bad as Jr High boys after PE. Also, I was glad when people with sweat dripping off their arms asked us to hand them a bagel instead of just reaching in and grabbing one; seriously, who wants someone else's sweat all over their food?!!

For our labors there we got free shirts and bagels! I think next year I'll sign up to do the 10k-- it's not super far and it could be a good time.

After 2 hours of being perveyors of carb loaded bagels, we met up with the parental units and little bro to watch the parade. It was shorter than I thought it would be and we had good grass seats in the shade so it wasn't as hot as I expected.

My siblings never believed that Pioneer Day was a "real" day since they spent the first years in FL where it's not really a big deal, or any sort of deal, actually! The girls were amazed that everything was closed downtown and how many people actually spent the night camped out on roadsides just to have good seats for the parade. They were very surprised that member of the First Presidency would be in a parade (this year it was Pres. Eyring).

I wish I would have known you were there...I would have stopped. When I finished I turned right around to find Ben without stopping. Sounds like you had a fun time! Wanna 10K with me next year??
