In running talk, 13.1 DOES equal 1.5 in that 13.1. miles are one half of a full marathon. Sick and twisted that I know this from personal experience, and yet, I do (and I'm pretty proud of that)! My friend, Janet, and I ran the Bear Lake Half Marathon about 2 weeks ago in the oh-so-not-typical 50 degree June temperatures. It was overcast, drizzly, muddy and cold on June 12th but we ran anyway.

Before we even started the race, we turned right instead of left when 89 ended at the lake, leading us on a 10 mile detour into Idaho before turning around and realizing that if we'd have just turned right, we would've been at the race start WAY sooner than 30 seconds before the last shuttle left. That aside, we made the shuttle, got to the race start, waited in the port-a-potty-line (there were about 10 portable privies at the starting line), and then found a woman in charge who let us sign in by phone since we missed the check in tables before we got on the shuttle. We ran the whole way without numbers (those we put on after the race just for the picture). The race started and we ran and ran and ran and ran. I ran for 2 hours and 27 minutes-- making my goal time of 2.5 hours. My five favorite moments in the race included:
1- running down a dirt road that more closely resembled mud slush while listening to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire"
2- Being waved to and cheered on by perfect strangers who were hanging around the road sides
3- seeing my cousin and uncle drive by just when I was hitting my wall with about a 10k (6.2) miles left
4- *finally* passing a woman I'd been following for miles as we neared the 2 miles left mark
5- sprinting through the end to cross the finish line!
