Cloaked by Alex Finn
This is a really cute story about a boy who's a tailor and gets involved with a princess who promises to marry him if he can find her brother who's been turned into a frog. He goes on an adventure in the Florida Keys with a magic cloak, talking animals and his best friend who owns a magic ring. There's a witch and her jealous son and giants, too! It's really cute and super creatively ties lots of fairy tales together.
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
This book follows one day in a teenage girl's life: her last day. It's like Groundhog Day in that she repeats the same day over and over until she gets it right. It's full of teenage drama and rebellion-- don't get offended!
These next books are a series that was really interesting. The moon gets knocked close to the earth, creating all sorts of disasters. The first book follows a family in the South as they cope with loss of electricity, food shortages, pillaging, etc.
The second book follows some kids in New York City as they figure out life in a disaster zone. Their parents are missing. The schools stay open and will give you food if you do volunteer work in the community. They learn to rob dead bodies and keep warm in winter without power. The third book returns to the family from the first book. We catch up with how they're coping and living. They end up meeting the kids from the second book. The series is really interesting and thought provoking.
Matched takes place in a future, utopian society where people are matched to get married to their perfect fit in society. It usually works, until one day a girl gets matched with two people... both boys from her town and she learns her society isn't quite what it's cracked up to be.
This series is another one where the girl has two great boys to choose from that appeal to different aspects of her personality.
Crossed takes the same characters and moves them into new adventures with society outcasts and wars.
The third book comes out this summer and I'm excited to see how it ends!

I read the Pfeffer series this week. Hmm. I am not satisfied. It is interesting to evaluate the validity of emotional and physical reactions to such traumatic events. I appreciate the author's presentation of Alex especially. There is such turmoil in him. I cannot say I loved it or even liked it, but it was worth reading. It causes me to pause and consider, what character describes me? What would I do differently and how prepared am I for any such event?
