Want to keep your kid(s) out of prison?

"It is rather depressing to note that some states plan for the number of prison beds needed for the future using the numbers of children failing to achieve basic reading proficiency by the third grade."

I'm working on my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction: Reading and since I teach Jr. High English/Language Arts, I'm extremely interested in making sure people 1- CAN read and 2- like it on some level.

My plea to anyone who has anything to do with children is this: READ TO THE KIDS IN YOUR LIFE!!! Read to them early, read to them often, and never stop reading to/with them :) Reading with young kids is actually the single most important factor in ensuring academic success in their life.

Yay! Amen! Speaking of Master's...I kinda think this week's assignment is silly! Hope you're having better luck with your group than I am with mine!

I've been reading your blog for a week or two, but this is the first time I've posted a comment. Your blog is so insightful and interesting. It was WEIRD to see the picture of you and your sisters. Two of them weren't even born when you moved to Florida, and the other two have aged by, what, 18 years??? And Alan, a married man.

Good luck with the new school year!
