Adventure

As part of the Utah Writing Project yesterday the committee brought in Tom Romano, a very familiar name in the world of teaching writing. He had so many great ideas about how to get kids writing and how to get them thinking. One exercise we did involved taking an emotion or quality and personifying it.

Here's what I wrote:
Adventure unexpectedly drops down with a parachute strapped to her back, goggles on her eyes, flashlight in one hand, and a tattered map in her back pocket. She smiles brightly, laughs wholeheartedly, watches perceptively. She quickly illuminates an obscure corner of her crinkled map before glancing up with a mischievous grin, daring anyone to defy her newly formed plot.

The first person to grab Adventure's eye is Caution. Caution engages Adventure in a staring contest until Adventure first squints, then grins and shakes her head from side to side, effectively ending the competition. She deftly twirls around, grabs Determination's hand and spirits away.
