Antigua, Guatemala
Our first full day in Guatamala we spent exploring the streets of Antigua-- map in hand! Antigua is reportedly one of the safest cites in the country-- it's very touristy, very colorful and very busy. There were a few things that surprised me:
- how quickly women and girls came up to sell their wares if you stopped for more than 5 seconds;
-how colorful all the buildings were (oranges, reds, yellows, greens, blues);
-how narrow the streets were; the seeming lack of traffic rules (there are only stop signs at instersections and no apparent way to tell who can cross through next);
-how old everything feels and looks (we found a church built in the 1100's);
- how easy getting lost is because there aren't consistent street signs and so many of the streets look identical
- how many little language schools are everywhere (people from all over the world come here to study Spanish)
- how friendly all the people we talked to were (natives, other tourists, everyone)
