School in Nueva Concepcion

Our first full day in the Polochic we divived up into different groups and I was sent to visit the school in Nueva Concepcion. The school is visibly located on top of a small hill behind a cement basketball court painted a bright blue and green. The school is a rectangular cement block building with three classrooms, a wooden storage building, a small outhouse behind the school, and a big black rain bucket to collect water.

There are three male teachers who teach kids first through sixth grade. In room one, Angel teaches sixth, fourth and third grades. In the second room, Miguel teaches first and second grades and in the third room, Juan teaches third and fifth grades. With all the different levels in the same room, the teachers work by teaching one group of kids while the others work together and then he switches and teaches the other group. I can't even imagine having to work like this, especially when your kids are sitting at desks that inflict splinters if they're rubbed the wrong way and on chair seats will fall off if they're jostled too much. But, the teachers love their kids, love teaching, and love their community.
