the Terra Cotta soldiers in Xii'an, China
The French Prime Minister named these clay soldiers as the 8th Wonder of the World. Considering how many there are (over 2,000) in how large an area (two football fields), I won't argue. Every soldier has a different face and they are all lined up in battle formation. Each section of soldiers is wearing the apporpriate outfit for his army job: fighter, archer, calvary, etc.
These life size men were found in 1975 by a group of farmers who were digging a well. Imagine their surprise when a hand comes up with the bucket they'd put down. They called the government (the Chinese government owes pretty much ALL land in China) who subsequently sent out scientists to dig it up and they found this amazing army of colored terra cotta.
The day we were at the musuem the main farmer given credit for the find was there and I got him to autograph my souvenier book!
