Coyote in Westminster, CO

Last week when I was in Colorado for a middle school teaching conference I saw a coyote! I couldn't sleep one night so around 6am I got up and went outside for a walk on a trail behind the hotel. There were little cottontail rabbits everywhere and "potguts" (aka ground squirrels) all over, too. I rounded a corner of the trail and came into a big field covered in holes and popping out of the holes were potguts all squealing. I was surprised because none of the other animals screamed when I passed by, but then I saw it-- the coyote. It was standing in the middle of the field, surrounded by these very annoyed and scared rodents, just calming watching them all. He saw me and watched me for a couple of seconds, before sauntering off towards a little stream. I stood there and watched to see what he would do. He just stood these watching all the little animals when suddenly, a big black bird swooped down and clawed at the coyote's ear, then swooped off. The coyote didn't do anything besides shakes his head and kept watching the area. He started watching me again and I got that cold chill that you get when you're afraid something bad might happen and I decided to mosey my way on back to the hotel. I really didn't want to fight off a coyote at 6:30am!
