So, the other day I went to Sports Authority to pick up a new pair of running shoes because A) my other shoes were bugging my feet and B) if I'm going to be running 14+ miles a week I figured I needed real running shoes and not trail-runners.
I got to the store and I will admit I'm slightly intimidated by people there because they always look so athletic and fit but I told myself, "Hey, you're training for a marathon. You're testing to a new rank in Taekwon Do, you can be confident in here," and I found the running shoe section. Little did I know the trial that awaited me. I figured I'd go to the running shoes, try on a pair of Sauconys since they're my favorite brand and that would be that. Hahaha.
The shoes that first caught my eye were Sauconys on sale for $35-- I love Saucony shoes and for $35, nice! Sadly, they just didn't feel right. I moved up my price point a bit and then moved it up again and I found a great pair of shoes I thought would be awesome. But, the realist side of me decided that I should at least see what else is out there before making a final commitment (I think I have the same problem in finding a man.. but that's a story for another day...).
After trying on 5 pairs of Sauconys, I tried on 6 pairs of Asics, 3 pairs of Nikes, 1 pair of adiddas, went back to the Saucony pair I liked, tried on 2 pairs of New Balance, went back to 2 pairs of Asics, went back to the Sauconys and finally ended up with one pair of Sauconys and one pair of Asics. I put on one pair and walked up and down the aisle then did the same with the other pair. Then I tried on one brand on one foot and the other brand on the other and jogged up and down the aisle. Then I switched brands and feet and did it again. Since I was still having a hard time choosing, I put the Sauconys both on again and then the Asics and jogged around some more. After 60-- no joke SIXTY-- minutes, I finally chose the pair of shoes that will be my close friends for the next few months.. Asics. I haven't had Asics since high school.
Random observation: When people try on athletic shoes for running, tennis, basketball, hiking, etc. they move around a lot but always look at their feet! I realized I was doing the same thing when I almost ran into a rack of socks that I hadn't noticed. My question is: does looking at your feet while trying to figure out if they feel right make them fit better?
